March 10, 2016

With just over a month to go until the 2016 Torture, registrations are steadily mounting.  A total of 54 people have registered to date: a combination of 18 individual entrants, six 2-person, and eight 3-person teams.

Professional ultrarunner, Eric Senseman, will be running the Torture for the first time on behalf of the prestigious SCOTT Running team and is expected to set a fast pace and a new course record.   Or will a BVI runner be able to challenge him?  Vincent Fournier of Virgin Gorda, the fastest man in the BVI so far this year, has registered as an individual entrant and is sure to present a challenge for the FuelBelt Fastest Sprint Award to be awarded for the fastest time from the start line to the first aid station at West End.  This is a category which is sure to be hotly contested by the experienced runners of the BVI who pound that route frequently.

The ladies are already outnumbering the men in the individual category 10-8.  Bridget Klein of St Croix set the course record of 5 hours 25 minutes, will we have a female champion this year as we did for the 2015 event?     In the 2 and 3 person teams it is an even split between the men and women at 18 each with some very strong entries.  However, there are only two all-women teams, one two-person, and one 3-person, the others are mixed or all male.  The first placed 3-person team from last year, “Demon Deacons BVI”, will be back to defend their win along with several new 3-person teams for this year.  In the 2-person team category there are already six teams entered, three times as many as in the inaugural event.

A broad spectrum of ages of those already registered will make for an interesting race.  Team “Family Affair”, a 3-person team which will be flying the French flag has been entered by one BVI resident and her parents are flying in to participate with her.

This year, thanks to our sponsors, we are brimming with some great prizes for awards in several different categories.  The competition is sure to be fierce.  Jeep is sponsoring the King of the Mountain, awarded for the fastest time over the steepest climb from Stoutt’s Lookout to highest point on the course at Sage Mountain.  Cape Air is sponsoring the fastest descent from Sage Mountain to Brewer’s Bay and Mourant Ozannes has provided a prize for the fastest second half time – Sage Mountain to the finish.

Are you short a team member or want to compete but would like to share the pain as a team?  We can connect you with running partners here.

There is still plenty of time to register before the cut off date of one week prior to the event – Friday 10th April.  The goody bags are filled with fantastic freebies and the covetable 2016 Torture shirt by ZootSports.  What are you waiting for?
