The Tortola Torture – the BVI’s most extreme athletic event and only ultramarathon – will see a longer course with more climbing in 2016.

The new course takes competitors to Sage Mountain, missing Cane Garden Bay. This change has added 659 feet of climbing and 1.8 miles to the total mileage. The climb from Carrot Bay to Sage Mountain will be 2.7 miles, ascending to 1,532 feet.

The 2016 course will have 6,587 feet of climbing over 12.8 miles, with 13.1 miles of descending, and only 7.5 miles on flat. The steepest gradient will 33.3%.

With the course finishing at last year’s line, the distance is 33.4 miles. However, the final finish line is to be confirmed, and the finish might be slightly further. Watch this space.

Ludicrous gradients, Caribbean heat and humidity will, like last year, add to the challenge.
